Hello Lutris Support,
this is incomplete but all I’ve got - couldn’t get a log file or report as was rushed
the EA app requires updates every month or so, and over the last six months, I’ve had two events where the update in Lutris did not seem to complete - just an infinite EA app ‘Update’ loop.
I’ve also been seeing weird events from the running of my EA games - errors after successful play.
Does anyone else see these kinds of events from the EA app and games?
What is the best way to install updates?
What is the best way to do a complete Uninstall / Reinstall?
Any suggestions will be appreciated!
Regards, Jim
I’m a relatively new Linux Mint user and I have had a hell of a time with the EA App. Every single time it receives an update, the update fails to apply and the app ends up in a broken state. It’s been so obnoxious that I used @qgnox’s post above as a starting point to make myself a step-by-step guide on how to fix the issue so my old ass doesn’t have to remember how to do it. I’ve followed these steps for the last 4 EA App updates and it has worked every time. Your mileage may vary, but I wanted to share my guide here in hopes that someone else finds it helpful:
If the patch applied successfully, there will be an EA Desktop folder inside the root folder that contains EALauncher.exe. You’re good, go to step 7.
If the patch failed, there will be a folder containing the patch version number and an EA Desktop? folder in here. Something like ~/13.676.0.6189/. Fix it:
Browse to the version number folder. There should be an EA Desktop folder within it that contains the patched EALauncher.exe
Copy this EA Desktop folder and paste it in the parent folder, so that it is a sibling to EA Desktop? and the patch folder.
Delete the EA Desktop? folder.
Leave the patch folder, it will get removed automatically.
In Lutris, revert the Configure / Game Options / Executable value back to the original EALauncher.exe
# Sample Original Path
/home/<username>/Games/ea-app/drive_c/Program Files/Electronic Arts/EA Desktop/EA Desktop/EALauncher.exe
You can now launch the app and play without reinstalling all your games.
Yeah, oneup for @oneup11771 here. That’s what I’ve been having to do for some months now. The client even launches after update, but from the wrong directory. Next launch through lutris is missing executable.
It’s probably charset problems… it looks to me like they are trying to get cute trying to change the directory name to include special characters (e.g. some registered or trademark symbol) and their directory creation fails (“EA Desktop?”).
What I do is just delete the empty Ea Desktop directory move the new EA Desktop directory out of the staging directory and then when I run the client the destager cleans up the mess.
I have followed the exact guide from this post yet it does not work for me…
I i am succesfully getting to step 6 and there the problems arise. I have no folder named the ea version number. I get the EA Desktop? Folder as well but i also get the normal EA Desktop Folder. I chose to now remove the EA Desktop? and everything should be fine no? (ps, the EA Desktop? is empty)
Well if i change back the executable path the repair did not update the thing. And also it seems to have made things worse. I get on a screen that tells me that a background process crashed and that i can quit or manually start the update.
So i choose to manually start the update, i get in a terminal window where it shows the download progress and then after 100% it gets me to the next window and says “Failed to destage”
After that i quit and i see the said Staged Files but not in a numberd update folder but like this:
~/Games/ea-app/drive_c/Program Files/Electronic Arts/EA Desktop
Permissions Size User Group Date Modified Name
drwxrwxr-x@ - benni : 3 Jun 22:10 'EA Desktop'/
drwxr-xr-x - benni : 11 Jun 13:56 StagedEADesktop/
.rw-r--r-- 246M benni : 11 Jun 13:55 StagedEADesktop.zip
.rw-r--r-- 512 benni : 11 Jun 13:55 StagedEADesktop.zip.sig
drwxr-xr-x - benni : 3 Jun 22:10 VC/
$ ll StagedEADesktop
Permissions Size User Group Date Modified Name
drwxrwxr-x@ - benni : 11 Jun 13:56 Destager/
drwxr-xr-x - benni : 11 Jun 13:56 'EA Desktop'/
now two options. Copy the whole contents to the EA Desktop Folder and change the executable path to go one step deeper and then launching the ea app does absolutely nothing and silently crash or copy only the contents of the new EA Desktop Sub folder of the staged changes. Then i get the same background process crashed screen, i click on update and it says it is up to date and quits.
