I’m building a new computer. I have about 60 games installed through lutris, some GOG, some indie or downloaded games from places like itch.io, stuff like that. I’ve always kept the installers, but I’m running out of room. I have read that I need to back up a few folders in ~home to keep all my settings and everything, which should be easy enough. If I make sure all the paths to my game hard drive are the same, is it just a matter of moving the game folders? Or do I need to keep these installers and reinstall everything? And lastly, I was just going to compress each game folder for a quicker transfer from drive to drive, would that cause any problems?
You can move everything intact if you get Lutris’ program data. There’s some discrepancy on where that will be, if your Lutris configuration is older or installed through FATpack or something.
My Lutris configuration exists in:
/home/grogan/.config/lutris
/home/grogan/.local/share/lutris
Yes, try to make the paths to the games the same to avoid editing paths. Another thing that helps is to make your user and group numbers (UID and GID) for your user the same. For example 1000:1000 (which is usually the default for the first user on most distros)
I’ve done that three times since I started using Lutris. I think my Lutris setup is 5 years old (2020’ish originally)
P.S. I wouldn’t waste my time individually compressing game directories, it will be faster to just cp -a it. Most game files will not benefit from compression because the bulk of the data is already in archives.
Awesome, thats as easy as it gets. Thanks for the answer.
