[Solved] Witcher 3 crashes on startup with DXVK enabled

Please, help me.

I would like to leave behind Windows completely so i’m a newbie to Linux.

The first place i heard Lutris is the Linus Tech Tips’ video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsgI1mkx6iw just because i tried to install Mesa and with sudo apt upgrade it didn’t do anything after ppa adding and sudo apt update.

I used the second installer with the DXVK issue link and i have the Steam version of the GOTY edition.

Then i tried many ways to install it, and i have packages installed:
Synaptic:

vulkan-utils
mesa-vulkan-drivers
libvulkan1
libvulkan1:i386
libvulkan-dev

dependencies it listed:

wine-devel-amd64
wine-staging-amd64

Is Mesa something to do with DXVK or is it in the Mesa?
How can i make sure DXVK is installed properly?

I watched lot of tutorials how to install DXVK with Lutris, but i got nowhere. The Witcher 3 did run with old drivers and just pure wine with around 1-2 fps and with Lutris i couldn’t get out more from it. when i used the option “enable DXVK” the game crashes (immediately after starting, just stuck with a black screen and sometimes few clicks with the mouse completely close the game). Now i patched the nvidia drivers from 384 to 396 (i thought it was updated because it is a relatively new install 1-2 months) and the game is still crashing i suppose DXVK is not installed properly. without DXVK enabled the game runs but even with the new driver i still have 1-2 fps. i used DXVK 0.63 and 0.71. I thought just reinstall it but i don’t know the proper way and i don’t want to make things even worse

(I tried to just add the dll files in wine config but the game folder doesnt have c and system folder so i couldn’t i typed the dll names in the dll overrides bar and it was there. I added d3d11 and dxgi as native, but the game with DXVK enabled still crashes without it doesn’t even start). I don’t know i need to replace them but i suppose, or i shouldn’t be able to find them there at all?

i have kernel v4.18.6 Ubuntu Studio 16.04. (lsb_release -a I thought it was 18.04… just here realizes… i don’t know how it happened.)

Sorry if my writing is not too informative, Thank you for your answer.

You will want 396.54.02 drivers which you can get off nvidias development beta page or from a community repository perhaps? I use ARCH and AUR is quite handy for things like this.

Also you can tell Lutris to start in a terminal window and then also enable debugging to get some idea of what is going wrong. System then Runner options respectfully.

Some games require extra files from directx such as exampled below by using winetricks:

WINEARCH=win64 WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.wine64folder" winetricks d3dcompiler_43 d3dx11_42 d3dx11_43

You don’t need to mess with DXVK DLL files if you just choose the version (0.71 atm) in the Lutris configuration section of your runner icon for whatever your trying to get working (steam/witcher3)

I have already using 396.54 driver sorry for the miswriting. I try to install it.

some page mentions nvidia-smi. unknown command
nvidia-settings -q all

ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system

Do i need the 396.54.02?

This is what i got from terminal.

not sure how critical those errors are. maybe someone else can chime in.

I think i just make a backup and reinstall ubuntu and try again. My dualboot system is a mess.

Try

vainfo

if you don’t have installed, install it. Your game has an error message with the following:

You either don’t have the aproppriate libraries or somethings not working.

What I’m 99% is truly happening if you’re not using your graphics card, you’re using IntelHD graphics. Since you couldn’t start

nvidia-settings

That’s a big tell that your drivers didn’t install properly. Did you use your Driver Manager to install the drivers? I had a lot of headache when I tried installing the drivers directly from the NVidia website. I’m on Linux Mint 19/Ubuntu 18.04.

If the drivers don’t install correctly, go to your BIOS settings, disable secure boot and try again.

If you’re quite sure the drivers are installed correctly, try

sudo prime-select nvidia

This will force the selection of your discrete graphics card to draw your desktop. If this succeeds, you shall be able to open

nvidia-settings

If not, it probably means your drivers aren’t installed correctly.

on my system I only have the nvidia stuff installed.

Maybe installing libvulkan1 is causing you issues because the NV drivers have vulkan components installed already, also you want to install the 32bit libraries when asked.

Also don’t you need to use some sort of nvidia prime optimus thing when you have a iGPU?

i have installed it like this:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-396 then i have selected it in softwares & updates’ driver page

vainfo gives me:

libva info: VA-API version 0.39.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns -1
libva error: va_getDriverName() failed with unknown libva error,driver_name=(null)
vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

sudo prime-select nvidia

then i uninstalled libvulkan1 completely in synaptic and the game is still crashing. i tried to reinstall the packages then:

(i tried to install 396.54.02 beta driver it asked for header files. but sudo apt autoremove removed my kernel 4.18.6’s header then i tried to remove and reinstall the kernel on 4.18.5 with Ukuu but it won’t boot on that kernel anymore, so i use 4.18.5)

Ok you have quite a few issues going on here.

First maybe you could try enabling DRI3 which is likely your running DRI2. You can do a search on howto do that with your distro but basically its typically a xorg.conf option which is located in /etc/X11/xorg.conf or inside xorg.conf.d directory… if you don’t have one then perhaps its time to generate one and configure some stuff.

Since your running a intel HD graphics chip as your desktop display out? then I dunno the exact method but you can use nvidia-settings to generate a xorg file but again, your intel igpu may not like that. You likely need some Primus special sauce in the xorg.conf.

Ultimately you want to enable DRI3 rendering path!

Wouldn’t it be better to just reinstall the OS? I don’t want to bother you with these ocean of logs, i planned a reinstall anyway.

Is it can be a problem if i use constantly two displays?

I have to xorg.conf files with date in their names xorg.conf.09062018 and xorg.conf.09082018 i tried to generate a xorg.conf file but it’s completely different from the other two also none of these has row like ```
Option “DRI” “2”

I just need to add it for the device section like this? Other rows copied from xorg.conf.09082018
Section “Device”
Identifier “nvidia”
Driver “nvidia”
BusID “PCI:1@0:0:0”
Option “ConstrainCursor” “off”
Option “DRI” “3”
EndSection

Is it a problem if there are more than one conf files? will the system use the latest one? the newly generated one has far more rows also i don’t have xorg.conf.d folder i think.

sudo service lightdm stop
sudo X -configure
sudo mv xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo start lightdm

You can try reinstalling the OS but I wouldn’t be surprised if you come back here with same issue.

I have this annoying bug.

Install Wine-staging in your machine, then install DXVK manually from this link below

then choose The wine version you like from settings and uncheck DXVK and it will work without any problem.

I have installed wine staging with sudo apt install wine-staging, but i don’t know how to install dxvk i have downloaded it and i think i need winetricks to install it but it is not installed and i’m not sure it is not going to break anything if i install it.

winetricks setup_dxvk.verb

is it the correct way to install it?

Open terminal inside the folder contain the last DXVK you downloaded, and write:

winetricks --force setup_dxvk.verb

and

winetricks d3dcompiler_43

to be able to run dx10 games as well.

Thank you. It seems like the DXVK problem is gone, but the game still doesn’t start. When i run Lutris in terminal it writes the following:

I red that maybe it is the screen uses 16 bit depth instead of 32 and it and it should be set in the Xorg.conf file but i don’t know exactly where and how or maybe i’m completely wrong.
