[Solved] Cannot run Wine Steam

I am new to lutris, and i really want to get this working. but i’ve run into a few snags.

I got to the point of installing steam using a few different versions of wine (changing the config from wine staging 2.15 through 2.21, x86_64 and i386) with same results.

wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\winemenubuilder.exe"

running on Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia if that makes a difference (from what i have read it dosnt ::shrug::slight_smile:

any help would be appreciated.

wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\winemenubuilder.exe"

wine: cannot find L"C:\windows\system32\winemenubuilder.exe" can mostly be ignored. Disable winemenubuilder.exe in winecfg is the typical recommendation from what I have seen.

I don’t specifically know what issue your having besides that? but you do know Wine is at version 3.13 at the moment correct? so if you need 2.21 for a specific game then that makes sense, but otherwise you should download a newer wine runner.

There are a few tricks to resolving steam issues such as disabling sandboxing but I can’t remember the lines. Also most people use wine64 these days unless you have something 32bit and old to run.

TBH i the last time i worked with wine was like 10 years ago. i was hoping to just run lutris and it would all work by itself and manage the versions it needs. i assume than i need wine CFG and lutris and the other installers do not install it? is their a current guide i can read through sine it seems i may be missing a few things to get steam running.

So from what you are saying, it’s just a bs message from wine i can ignore, though that dosnt help me because steam is not even showing up. dosnt load at all, and theirs really no indication of why or errors beyond that one. Is their a way to get more verbose logging? i assume theirs a command line i can launch it with for better logs…

by default it looked like it was using 2.13 when lutris installed wine. i actually didnt see 3.0+ in the wine version manager list.

I should be using the 64 bit version, i do have that set in the config.

Thanks for the reply. hopefully i can figure this out.

You need to find and start at 101 again, your asking real basic stuff which has been covered about 1million times on this forum and site in various places.

Also check Linus Tech Tips linux gaming video recently (14min vid) which has links to Level1techs forum with extra information on using lutris and setting things up!

i kinda figured as much. That video is actually what got me down this path.

i appreciate the patients and pointing me in the right direction.

ok, so it took a lot of digging of errors i found in the debugger to finally find that i needed winehq-staging… why this is not in a simple start guide, i have no idea.

It’s coming with the 0.5.0 release.
