[SOLVED] Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora worked for a while, then stopped

Hello all. I installed Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora with Lutris, by installing the Ubisoft Connect EXE from their website, and then downloading the game through the Ubisoft Connect Launcher.

The Runner is “System (9.0 (Ubuntu 9.0~repack-4build3))” running on Kubuntu 24.10 with an all-AMD system.

I played the game all the way through, a little over 80 hours, then recently bought The Sky Breaker DLC, and now the game won’t launch anymore. Lutris will get Ubisoft Connect to open just fine, but if I click Play on the game in my Library, nothing happens. UC says, “This game is running,” but there is no process showing for it.

I tried swapping between Proton GE, Proton Experimental, and a couple other Runners, but Ubisoft Connect will only open if I use the System 9.0 Runner mentioned above.

During the Autumn Sale, I bought the game again through Steam, and it behaved a little differently. Steam actually synced my save files from Ubisoft Connect, so all my progress was there. The game launched just fine, and got to the menu screen, plus it would load the game, but as soon as the area loaded, the game froze.

Since it didn’t solve my problem, I refunded the game, and now I only have it on Ubisoft Connect again, and I’m back to troubleshooting on Lutris. Wondering where to go from here.

Hi,

Ubisoft connect happily runs using both Proton - Experimental and GE-Proton9-20 for me. I also have all AMD, Mint 22 - probably not too far off what you’re running in terms of drivers/kernel.
However, as a base, I use wineHQ sourced wine-staging (noble,) rather than the ubuntu repo repack, plus Git Lutris and Git umu-launcher for proton support.

Only slightly old thing is that Lutris used to have issues changing runners, unless you quit the client completely after changing, it didn’t work.

Does your game “show logs” have anything useful in it?

I think it still does! I was completely unaware of this. My problem is solved. I upgraded to 0.5.18 just now, then ran the command in this comment: Lutris can't use Proton anymore - #19 by Michel86

After that, I quit Lutris after switching Ubisoft Connect’s runner to Proton Experimental, and for the first time, I actually saw a download notification for Proton in the bottom-left corner of Lutris. Launched Ubisoft Connect, then hit Play on Avatar, and it installed DirectX, which it hadn’t tried to do since this issue started.

Game is running like a charm. Thank you!
