Please explain how to update games...THIS REALLY NEEDS TO BE EXPLAINED!

I want to update both (both games are from GOG) Front Mission 2, and Metal Gear Solid, but I don’t see anyway to apply the updates. I tried installing the updates for Front Mission 2 as a new game, and it gave me an error and told me it couldn’t find Front Mission 2…

And how do you “Run EXE inside Wine prefix”? I selected this option for Front Mission 2, then selected the exe file for the update from GOG, but it does nothing when I do this. It just sits there.

You have made updating game exceedingly obtuse and strange.

Oh, I see now. I selected “Run EXE inside Wine prefix” but I never go the window that was supposed to pop up asking me what language to use as it popped up behind the main Lutris window… why does it ask me what language to use anyway? It’s already using my system language. I will say the update doesn’t seem to be moving… the little time bar thing is just sitting there and not moving.

And it says gog patcher is not responding so I force quit.

It looks like the GOG patcher is just not working… The time bar just sits there and does nothing.

I remember having bad experiences with updating games in Lutris, too… I’m not a regular gamer, so it’s been some time since my last try by now, and I hoped it was improved in the meantime, but I guess it’s not… Or is it?

Lutris has no feature to keep your GOG game updated, you have to do it manually:

  • run update exe file from Lutris Wine menu “Run EXE inside Wine prefix
    or
  • reinstall the game with a more recent version. Be careful to not erase your game saves

There is no way to get the recent version of the GOG game though… I mean, it only lists the original version, and then the update files.
