Lutris keeps reinstalling CachyOS Proton ... and complains it is already installed

When i try to install a new Windows game, after confirming the game should install into the /Game repository in my documents, and even before having selected the .exe installer, Lutris insists on reinstaling CachyOS Proton everytime (currently the exact file is proton-cachyos-11.0-20260703-slr-x86_64.tar.xz).
Of course, only when the 300Mb download is complete, it realizes it’s already installed and says (roughly translated) : Failed extracting /home/user/.cache/lutris/proton-cachyos-11.0-20260703-slr-x86_64.tar.xz: [Errno 17] The file exists: '../gamefixes-steam/61500.py' -> '/home/user/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/proton-cachyos-x86_64/protonfixes/gam (it seems the end of the path is truncated but you can easily assume it’s /gamefixes-steam/61500.py)

Note that on a first install nothing fails of course, as Lutris doesn’t find a similar file already.
I already tried to delete the faulty folder, which allows the game to rightfully install but - again - forces Lutris to redownload install said CachyOS version of Proton everytime.

What can i do ? is it a bug ?

as i understand this will only delete this folder right @legluondunet ? i already tried that and the problem reappears whenever i try to install another windows game after that.

@petereddog i see you liked my post, we’ve been debugging for two days last week and came to the conclusion there’s somethingreally wrong with my system, as no Lutris installation (appimage, flatpak or system deb package) works as intended. So my next step is to wipe my disk clean and reinstall Linux Mint, which won’t happen so soon…
So if you have the same problem, and find the time to try that solution, please post here your results.

you are using an obsolete Lutris version, latest Lutris version is 0.5.22. If you use a Debian-Like distribution, it is strongly advice to install Lutris Flatpak to always have latest version installed.

I’m seeing the same thing as of today. (Ubuntu; system details below.)

Per the advice given above, I installed the most recent version available on the Lutris website (0.5.22)–but the issue remains present. :/

Confessedly, I am not using the Flatpak version:

After some trials in getting that installed (I don’t much use Flatpak, and didn’t have Flathub set up, etc.) I found that under said method of installation the files for my library of games are stored in a location different to that of my previous installation. As such, the new version of Lutris didn’t recognise my library, showing no games installed.

A quick attempt at a library-transplant failed.

So I uninstalled the Flatpak version, went back to the Lutris website, downloaded the .deb installer, and ran that–which seems to have worked to update the program while retaining my library!

(Of course, this means no automatic updates, but so it goes for now.)

you can migrate Lutris system configuration/Games files to a Lutris Flatpak install:

Most likely the data from yorur Lutris system is located in .local/share/lutris the flatpak data is in .var/app/net.lutris.Lutris/data/lutris delete .var/app/net.lutris.Lutris/data/lutris folder that was created when you launched the flatpak version. Then copy .local/share/lutris folder in it’s place.
when you launch the flatpak version you should see all your games as installed, you can then delete .local/share/lutris

Interestingly, as of today, the problem seems to have gone away!

I’m not sure of what changed–perhaps the system needed a restart that I hadn’t given it, or an update that came through after my last post?

I don’t know!

As to Flatpak, thank you for the instructions! I’ll give that a shot, I intend!
