Kubuntu Freezes While Installing GTA V (Resolved)

I can’t retrieve the log because the system freezes and I have to restart the PC to gain control of it again. There is no log of the game installation because the game has not yet actually installed successfully and doesn’t show up in the games library.

The freezing occurs around 30 seconds into the install every time. Once that happens, the mouse stops moving, the clock stops working. Every so often I can get the mouse to move for a second, and then it freezes. The clock does not change. I can’t access anything while this is occurring. No key commands, no interfaces, no terminals. The whole systems acts like it is bogged down. If I were to, for example, attempt to lock my screen, I can press the keyboard combination and after roughly 5 minutes, the lock screen might appear.

I went into the Ubuntu syslog and found this, and I don’t know if it helps, but it’s all I have:

It repeats that again and again for the next 20 minutes. I’m not sure what I should do. Every time I’ve tried this, everything freezes.

I don’t know what’s wrong for you, but any time I run any Wine I see those scsi i/o errors for my optical drive (two in your case, sr0 and sr1) in kernel messages. Something is trying to access it like a SCSI disk and of course it fails like that. That’s not the cause of your problems.

A bunch of firewall logging crap in there too, bad network/socket programming can cause deadlocks if network responses hang. Try disabling that UFW firewalling to see if that’s the source of your deadlocking.

That was it! I disabled the firewall and tried to install, and everything went through without a hiccup. Thank you so much! I would have never thought of the firewall as being the culprit!

Dropping packets and sending or accepting no response is not a nice thing to do

I have never liked things that do that. Not only that, it was pointlessly spamming your logs with needle-in-haystack rubbish.

You’re behind a NAT type device anyway.
