I’m at my brother’s house for the holidays, and he suggested we play Civ IV together.
He forced me to buy the game on Steam for compatibility reasons, but the experience there was truly atrocious for me. I had horrible graphical artifcats, the entire screen would suddenly be dominated by animals or various other graphical assets. Everytime someone moved, there was horrible flickering…it was unplayable.
I then insisted we give the GOG version a try, him on his windows box, and me on Linux.
Recently with the help of a few users here, I’ve been able to get the game running as it should on my computer
And we were able to find each other’s computers perfectly (I didn’t expect that through Lutris) and have fun playing.
This is a fluff post, to say thank you.
I’m sure if I went to the right forum, someone could have helped me out getting rid of my graphical issues via Steam…but Lutris emerged ahead.
I prefer to support GOG, becuase of its DRM-free policy, that’s more important to me than the marginally better prices I can get at times through Steam. However the biggest hurdle with GOG (and thus Lutris for me), is the fear of games not working. Whereas it seems like a simple one-click install in Steam.
But here this example showed that Steam’s one click install isn’t what it is marketed as (by the general community, I’m not sure what Valve says exactly).
Anyway, thanks to the Lutris team. There’s a reason why I’ve been donating for many years.
