World of Tanks very laggy - solved -

The World of Tanks game runs with a lot of lag, like it loses packs or something like that. Even the sound has micro cuts. Natively I can play other games at maximum quality without losing fps or having high ping (+400).

I got to Lutris through a tutorial on Youtube called " Instalar World Of Tanks en Linux // Ubuntu// Linux Mint". The installation was successful and the first few days I was able to play with some lag, nothing uncomfortable but lately it is unplayable because the fps go from 60 to 10 when I have the 60 fps limiter activated because it usually goes up to 150 fps.

The game originally (on Windows) worked very well and at maximum quality without any problems.

Hi, I suggest you to try this game with WineHQ-staging instead of default wine-ge or stable wine.

Instructions below are for ubuntu:

When you get to step “Install wine” choose “Staging branch” which is

sudo apt update
sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-staging

Make sure you first do:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update
sudo apt install libvulkan1 libvulkan1:i386

Final step is to right click game in lutris → configure → runner options → wine version and here select WineHQ staging and then save.

Is it possible that the emulation suffers from packet loss? Because the fps stay between 45 and 60 (not more than 60 due to the limiter).
The real connection of the game with the nearest server works on average 50ms but under emulation it has peaks of up to 500ms and then stabilizes at 60-80ms.

That’s what I can notice.
Could it be that I need to adjust something in the Lutris or Wine configuration?

There are 2 factors that can affect lags, graphics pipeline and network connection.

It will help if you please share your system info:

sudo apt update

Next step, close down ALL programs and browser tabs then open private browser window and go to:

I’m here to share the information you requested. The truth is that I never had connectivity problems with the native game on Windows.
Another point I want to point out is that under emulation and in a game (not within the game menu) looking at the ground, the lag is lower. Yes. It’s strange but I suppose it must be a rendering issue or something like that. I have everything at minimum just in case from minute zero.

Your distro as well as kernel is out of date, I’d update to latest available.
Your BIOS is also out of date, 4 years old, there are several newer versions here latest one being from 2023

Note that updating BIOS requires carefully following instructions which you can find on the link above.

When you’re done with this you basically should have minimums updated which includes distro, kernel, wine-staging and lutris which is already the most recent.

I believe this should give you better performances.

After writing the last message I got an update notification where the Kernel has been updated to version 5.15.0.118.118
Now I’m going to try to update the BIOS.
If everything goes well I’ll try the game again and leave an updated report.

I remember a previous poster had reinstalled Mint 21, had similar performance issues, which were fixed by updating the default v5 kernel to v6.
Version 5 kernels are still LTS, but for modern GPU and CPU support, you’ll want to be running a v6 kernel - particularly for all the optimisation for same that pairs with WINE and Proton.

Good day to all.
Yesterday I updated the Kernel and the Bios and I also re-entered the game to try it out and the result is worse, with great loss of performance, audio and even crashes.
Later, when I get home I will send a report and look into the issue of changing the Kernel because I agree that the LTS version is not the right one for game emulation.

I forgot to mention that I might want to install the proprietary AMD Radeon drivers. I’ve read that they give better performance than the open source ones. What do you think about this?

We tend to avoid the AMD drivers for gaming right now. They are usually built around an older version of Mesa and cause other issues when installed.
The stock Mesa that is provided for Mint (21 and since two days ago, Mint 22) work absolutely fine for me.

Ok, I’m going to leave the private driver issue aside. On another note, I’ll now leave the last game report. Then I’ll use “Mainline Kernel Installer” to keep the kernels updated and be able to use the v6 kernels.

Problem solved!
By updating the Kernel to its latest version the game now runs as smooth as silk, to the point of working just like on Windows.

I hadn’t been on WoT in about a decade, so I thought I’d give it a go.
The installer works fine, fonts are a bit quirky, but other than that it works fine - it is still quite demanding, and using DirectX12 for 4k resolution.

…I just re-read your machine specs.
Once you are done with drivers, if you still have significant issues on minimum detail levels - your GPU specs just about scrape minimum, and your CPU is below requirements for WoT - your only choices are going to be to drop screen resolution, or upgrade.

I run latest kernel 6.9.7 and latest proprietary Nvidia drivers, wine-staging and updated lutris, all games work without issues with these 4 things updated.

Quite the opposite. I’m actually above the minimum requirements and pretty close to the recommended requirements. What I don’t do is play in 4k, which is crazy for the hardware available in my region. Currently I can play with a good resolution and with high quality graphics without losing performance. I’m really satisfied and I don’t ask for more for a home computer where I usually work and play. Maybe, later if the economy allows it, I can replace the Athlon 3000g with a Ryzen 3 or 5 processor and without having to stop using the Radeon RX 550 card.
